Further Information About Taiji37 Form

Taiji37 Form

Taiji37 form is a taijiquan (tai chi chuan) form – taijiquan forms are the familiar sets of movements that we often see people practicing in parks, etc. The Taiji37 form was developed from Nanpai Taijiquan. The Taiji37 form is shorter than the well-known Yang style form, but it utilises more finely tuned postures. It was developed by Dr Shen Hongxun, who studied with a number of famous wushu masters in Shanghai during the 1950s, including Yao Huanzi, Tian Zhaoling, and Xia Zixin.

History of Taiji37

Shen Hongxun grew-up in Shanghai and lived near to many famous wushu masters. He first began studying taijiquan when he was around 10 years old. Dr Shen showed an aptitude for the practice and was soon introduced to his main teacher, Professor Yao Huanzi. Yao Huanzi's taijiquan knowledge came from Yang family lineage, mainly via Tian Zhaoling.

Dr Shen also studied and practised the Southern school of taijiquan, often called 'Nanpai Taijiquan', with Xia Zixin. In this practice, there is no set form, but rather a series of 37 precise and expansive standing postures. The aim of these postures is the development of internal forces (taiji jin) that create explosive yet controlled martial movements. Dr Shen developed the Taiji37 form from these standing postures, as a means of making this knowledge more accessible to modern society.

Benefits of Taiji37

Although the standing postures of Nanpai taijiquan were originally used for martial applications, they also have the function of improving health and wellbeing. The postures create expansion throughout the body, improving body posture and flexibility, and releasing bodily stresses and old emotions. At an energetic level, Taiji37 strengthens and expands the energy body, and furnishes the right conditions for spiritual development through meditation.
